The core objective of this project is to design a residential space that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional for an aging couple, incorporating universal design principles to accommodate the current and future needs of the client. The design will focus on creating an environment that supports the client's independence, safety, and well-being, allowing them to age comfortably and securely in their home.
Objective
The primary challenges in this project were related to space planning, as I had to create a layout that balanced the needs of the clients while making the most of the available space. One challenge was designing flexible spaces that could serve multiple purposes, such as Marsha’s workspace and areas for hosting events, without making the space feel overcrowded or cluttered. Another challenge was ensuring that the aging-in-place features, like wider doorways and accessible bathrooms, were seamlessly integrated into the design without disrupting the flow or aesthetics of the home. I also had to carefully consider how to maximize natural light in each room while maintaining privacy and functional layout. These challenges helped me improve my problem-solving skills and my ability to balance design, function, and accessibility.
Challenges
This project helped me improve my space planning skills and learn more about universal design. I learned how to design a home that works for the clients now and in the future, focusing on aging-in-place features. I gained experience in creating flexible spaces that serve multiple purposes, like Marsha’s photography studio and areas for hosting events. I also learned how to include accessibility features like wide doorways and easy-to-use bathrooms without sacrificing style. The project taught me the importance of natural light in design and how to make a home comfortable and supportive of an active lifestyle.
